Spectacle with Parvathy Baul (India)

Parvathy Baul presents a collection of mystic, Sufi and yogi poems and songs coming from different traditions but all expressing the same concept ‘Love’ towards the holiness, as it is conceived in the Christian-Judaic tradition in the Canticle of Canticles.

In recent years, Parvathy Baul has been working through these great Love compositions of various styles and languages, so this will be an offering of songs and poems from Kabir, Nanak, Meera, Adi Shankara, Akka Mahadevi, Janabai, Rumi, Hafiz, Fakirs of Bangladesh and Pakistan, and original works of Buddhist Yogis of 6th 7th century from India and Tibet, apart from her own Baul path.

Parvathy Baul is a singer, painter and storyteller from West Bengal (India).

After receiving her initial music and dance training during her childhood, she studied visual arts at the Kala Bhavan at Shantiniketan, the university founded by Rabindranath Tagore.

Her meeting with the living tradition of Baul prompted her to choose the path of self-training in the Baul order rather than an institutional degree. Since 1995 she has performed in her home state Bengal and all over India and in several international festivals, including Festival de l’Imaginaire (Paris)”, the “Festival international du Conte et du Monodrame” (Beirut, Liban), Ethnomad (Ginevra, Switzerland), Transit 5, 6 e 7 (Holstebro, Danmark). In 2012 Parvathy organised the first women’s theatre festival in India, Tantidhatri, in connection with The Magdalena Project. The festival took place in Auroville and Pondicherry and was an occasion for women of both traditional and contemporary backgrounds to meet.
